A Program to Prevent Problem Gambling Stacked Deck , a school-based program, is designed to teach adolescents facts about gambling and related risks, encourages them to make responsible decisions regarding gambling, and helps prevent youth from becoming problem gamblers.
A randomized controlled trial was performed in which 14 high schools were randomly assigned to receive the Stacked Deck program or a control intervention. Students in 9th to 12th grade completed assessments at baseline and 4 months after the program ended.
Results indicated that students receiving the Stacked Deck program had significantly more negative attitudes about gambling, more gains in knowledge about gambling and problem gambling, improved awareness of and resistance to gambling fallacies, improved decision making and problem solving, decreased frequency of gambling, and decreased rates of problem gambling compared to the control group.
There were no changes in involvement in high-risk activities or money lost. The Stacked Deck program disseminates information through interactive lessons and utilizes math and teaches decision-making and problem-solving skills, which can prevent possible gambling problems for adolescents. This program uses a CD-ROM that includes a PowerPoint slideshow, student handouts, additional resources, parent information, and a facilitator's guide and can be integrated into scheduled health education or career management classes.
